The fountain was first erected in 1862, the gift of the philanthropist and heir to the Coutts banking fortune Angela Burdett-Coutts, the 1st Baroness Burdett-Coutts. It was designed by the architect H. A. Darbishire, and built in pink marble, granite and stone, with sculpted cherubs, Gothic arches, a slate roof and four clock-faces costing £6,000. The restoration saw work to the plumbing and stonework, as well as four new mirror pools and a weathervane.
