Drink at the Exmouth Arms

A decent - if a bit pricey - pub on Exmouth Market in Clerkenwell, the Exmouth Arms was is a pretty pub from the outside, seemingly rebuilt by Courage around 1915, though able to trace its history back at least 90 years earlier, to 1825 when a man named Richard Balls was the landlord.

Your author dropped in a couple of weeks ago during a trip to the area and was pleasantly surprised, all bare wood, food and ales with the only minor mishap being caused by some slightly confusing toilet/ dressing room signage. It was nicely busy on a weeknight, but not so much that it was impossible to find a seat, and though the bar staff were - predictably - all young fashionable types, they were very friendly.

  1. Great post about one of North London's better pubs in my opinion, although I have to pull you up on one thing - what's wrong with being young and fashionable?

  2. In this case, it's fine as they were terribly nice. Often, it speaks of people more worried about their own appearance and what people think of them than they are about making the world a better place.

  3. Agree with Barry here. It's sad that there is the presumption that young fashionable people don't have any concerns other than themselves and their looks. Arguably, people that are dressed without much apparent regard for the image they are projecting are just as likely to have a total disinterest in making the world a better place outside of their own bubble. You could even say that it speaks of lack of confidence and a wish to simply blend into the crowd, if anything...
