The first daily London to Edinburgh passenger service left London's King's Cross on
18th June 1862, taking 10½ hours with a stop for lunch in York.
Thankfully, it takes slightly less time today, but costs considerably more as your author will be discovering when he makes the trip for a
family birthday.
